The Thrive™ Approach

Our approach to feeding & swallowing support

Feeding and swallowing are deeply personal, relational and developmental experiences. At Thrive, we take a compassionate, evidence‑based and family‑centred approach to understanding what’s happening — and what will help.

We support infants, children, adolescents and adults with feeding, mealtime and swallowing needs, using a model that values collaboration, respect and meaningful outcomes.

Our Philosophy

Evidence‑based

Every assessment and recommendation is grounded in current research, clinical reasoning and best‑practice guidelines. We stay up to date so families can feel confident in the support they receive.

Collaborative

We work closely with families, carers, GPs, paediatricians, lactation consultants, dietitians, psychologists, OTs, speech pathologists and other healthcare professionals. This teamwork ensures coordinated, consistent care.

Person‑centred

Feeding and swallowing are shaped by routines, preferences, identity, culture and lived experience. We take the time to understand each person’s goals so support feels respectful, meaningful and achievable.

Across the lifespan

Our clinicians support feeding and swallowing needs from infancy through older adulthood. Our approach adapts to changing developmental, sensory, emotional and functional needs.

Holistic

Feeding and swallowing never occur in isolation. We consider sensory processing, oral‑motor skills, swallowing safety, emotional wellbeing, developmental history, medical background, family routines and environmental factors to build a complete picture.

Clear and practical

We provide straightforward explanations and realistic strategies that fit into everyday life. Our goal is to make support easy to understand and easy to use at home, school, aged care or in the community.

What Makes Thrive Different

Low‑pressure and responsive

We do not use force, pressure or “just one more bite” approaches. Our clinicians use neurodiversity‑affirming, trauma‑informed and relationship‑based strategies that prioritise safety, trust and connection.

We look at the whole person

Feeding is sensory, motor, emotional, developmental, relational and environmental. We consider all of it — not just what’s on the plate.

We support families, not just individuals

Feeding challenges affect routines, stress levels, social life and wellbeing. We work with families as partners in the process.

We work together

Our multidisciplinary team brings diverse expertise to understand the full picture and provide coordinated, evidence‑based support.

Feeding & Swallowing Are Multifactorial

Feeding and swallowing difficulties can arise from a combination of sensory processing differences, oral‑motor skills, swallowing safety, developmental factors, emotional wellbeing, medical history, family routines and environmental influences.

Understanding these factors helps us identify what’s contributing to the challenge — and what will make a difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

We support infants, children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. Feeding and swallowing needs change across the lifespan, and our approach adapts to each stage.

A feeding or swallowing assessment explores what is happening during mealtimes, how feeding skills are developing, and whether any medical, developmental, sensory, or oral‑motor factors may be contributing to difficulties. It includes discussion, observation, and evidence‑based clinical reasoning to guide next steps.

Yes. Most feeding assessments include both Speech Pathology and Occupational Therapy.

Families often seek support when feeding feels stressful, effortful, or uncertain, or when mealtime routines are becoming difficult to manage. If you have concerns about safety, comfort, skill development, or mealtime confidence, an assessment can help clarify what’s happening.
