Frequently Asked Questions

A practical guide for families starting their journey with us.

What does the Thrive Feeding Clinic help with

We support infants, children, and young people who experience challenges with feeding, eating, drinking, swallowing, mealtime routines, or food acceptance. Our clinicians assess what’s happening, why it’s happening, and how to help — always in a child‑centred, family‑friendly way.

Do I need a referral to book an appointment

No. You can self‑refer at any time. If you have reports from your GP, paediatrician, dietitian, or other health professionals, you’re welcome to share them — but they’re not required.

Can I use NDIS funding

We currently accept self‑managed and plan‑managed NDIS funding. NDIA‑managed (agency‑managed) plans will be supported once our NDIS registration is finalised.

Are Medicare rebates available

If your GP or paediatrician has provided a relevant care plan (such as a Chronic Condition Management Plan), you may be eligible for a rebate. You’ll pay the full fee on the day, and we’ll provide a receipt for you to claim through Medicare.

What happens before the first appointment

Once you book, you’ll receive a link to complete your New Client Forms, which include:

  • Consent and privacy information
  • Medical and developmental history
  • Feeding and mealtime details
  • Any relevant reports or documents

Completing these ahead of time helps your clinician prepare and ensures your appointment time is used effectively.

What happens during the first appointment

Your clinician will:

  • Discuss your concerns and goals
  • Review your child’s feeding history
  • Observe feeding or mealtime behaviours (if appropriate)
  • Identify contributing factors
  • Provide initial recommendations
  • Outline next steps or therapy options

You’ll leave with a clear understanding of what’s going on and a plan tailored to your child.

What should I bring to the appointment

Depending on your child’s age and feeding stage, please bring:

  • A few familiar foods
  • A few less‑preferred foods (if appropriate)
  • Your child’s usual drink bottle or cup
  • Bottles, teats, formula, or breastmilk (if bottle‑fed)
  • Any feeding equipment you use at home

How long are appointments

  • Initial assessments: usually 60–90 minutes
  • Follow‑up sessions: 60 minutes
  • Reports: completed outside of session time

Your clinician will recommend the most suitable appointment type.

Will I receive a report

Reports are optional and can be requested at any time. Some families need them for NDIS, school, childcare, or medical teams. Your clinician will discuss whether a report is recommended.

Can both parents or caregivers attend

Yes — and it’s often helpful. If someone can’t attend, we can include them via phone or video.

Do you offer telehealth

Yes. Telehealth is available for:

  • Parent coaching
  • Review appointments
  • Feeding support that doesn’t require in‑person observation

Your clinician will advise whether telehealth is suitable for your child.
